I was born in Managua, Nicaragua. I graduated in Philosophy in 1989, at St. Petersburg State University, during the Soviet period of Perestroika. I obtained my Master's degree in Economics from the Pontificia Universidad Católica, in Chile, and my Ph.D. in Economics from the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, in Argentina.
My main hobby is playing chess. I also enjoy nature, swimming and cycling. My greatest fear is the threat of extinction of human civilization, due to stupidity, avarice and arrogance, which is leading us to the destruction of our ecosystem and keeps us at risk of a nuclear confrontation. My favorite economists are: Adam Smith, David Ricardo, David Hume, John Roemer, Amartya Sen, Paul Krugman, Daron Acemoglu and Joseph Stiglitz. My favorite philosopher are Plato, Aristotle, Enmanuel Kant and John Rawls.
As a citizen and social researcher, I deeply value democracy, freedom and individual rights. As an economist, I know that the market is the most efficient mechanism that has been created to allocate the scarce resources available, but I also know that the market alone is not capable of generating equal opportunities for people. I adhere to the principle that the only fair sources of inequality are those that come from differences in the individual efforts. Therefore, I consider unfair all inequalities arising from demographic and social circumstances that are out of the individual control at the moment of birth, such as gender, race, nationality and social origin.
